The Rose – The Traditional Valentine’s Day Flower
Roses were enjoyed by the long-ago civilizations of Greece, Egypt and Rome, and the different shades that roses come in symbolize different things: crimson means romance, ivory means harmony, and blush and lemon mean amity. It is said that long ago Cleopatra actually sprinkled the blooms of this flower on her lover, Mark Antony. Empress Josephine of France also loved roses, and her yard in Paris had the nicest ones on the continent.
It was down to the Victorians to look deeper at flowers and how they can express feelings, especially those of love. The size, placement and flowers found in a Victorian bouquet would express specific things, minute details could make all the difference. Such as the difference between a single red rose, and a bouquet of red and white roses.
A multitude of different types of roses exist today: there are untamed roses; new yard roses that may be tiny, ascending, in a brier or a thicket; or antique yard roses that may ascend up walls. Roses, which have different shades and fragrances, are most popular in crimson, blush, ivory, and lemon for Valentine’s Day.
